Reach Out and Read is an evidence-based national nonprofit organization that promotes early literacy and school readiness, with a special emphasis on children growing up in low-income communities. Reach Out and Read takes place at 5,000 primary care health centers across the nation. In pediatric exam rooms during well visits, primary care physicians and nurse practitioners incorporate Reach Out and Read’s evidence-based model by advising parents about the importance of reading aloud and giving brand-new, developmentally and culturally appropriate books to children ages 6 months through 5 years.
For your mitzvah project, Reach Out and Read provides many opportunities for you to help:
Every Reach Out and Read site (a primary care health center) in the nation has to raise funds to sustain and maintain its Reach Out and Read program. Your fundraiser can help Reach Out and Read sites purchase at a great discount appropriate books for children ages 6 months through 5 years (average cost per book is $2.75). Donors in the past have had success encouraging families, groups and individuals to sponsor a child by donating Reach Out and Read costs for a child.
This is a great way for individuals, community organizations, children and adolescents to involve themselves in helping others, and book drives are fun to do. Please contact a Reach Out and Read site in your region to ask what the site may need and to learn about book delivery/site visit guidelines.
